OBITUARY

MRS. ESTHER JANE WALES

The death occurred in the Sacred Heart Hospital on Saturday evening, after a short illness of Mrs. Esther Jane Wales, wife of Mr. Albert Wales, aged 62 years.

With her husband and family deceased had been a resident of Marengo Street, Young, for the past 40 years, and she was highly esteemedby a wide circle of friends, her sweet disposition and kind heartedness endearing her to all who knew her.

Until two years ago deceased had enjoyed the best of health. She received a stroke in 1929 which resulted in partial paralysis. This did not affect her good spirits, and she still remained active. Last Thursday week illness supervened and deceased was removed to hospital, where despite medical and nursing skill, she gradually declined and she passed peacefully away as stated.

The late Mrs. Wales was a native of Rye Park, the daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. J. W. Perks. She was married at Burrowa in 1889 and came to Young with her husband immediately after the wedding, and has resided here ever since. Her life was one of devotion and self sacrifice for her family, and her almost daily acts of kindness and neighbourliness to others in times of sickness and trial will long be remembered.

A family of one son and two daughters survive, another son Des mond having predeceased her about three years ago. , The surviving members are Mrs. A. Moate (Yass), Mrs. A. I'Anson (landra) j and Mr. Earl Wales (Young). Brothers and sisters of the deceased are Mrs. A. Plumb (Gunning), Mrs. B. Begg (Young), Mrs. Harry Perks (Mill- thorpe), and Mr. Joseph Perks (Orange). The funeral took place from Patterson's Funeral Parlours to the Methodist portion of the Young cemetery, where the body was laid to rest in the family grave. Despite the short notice and extreme heat, the funeral was largely at- tended. Rev. P. H. Curtis officiated, conducting a short service before the cortege moved to the cemetery. The pall-bearers were Mssrs. I. Joyce, W. Smithers and deceased two nephews, Messrs. Oliver and Roy Wales.

THE FUNERAL

The funeral took place yesterday afternoon, the cortege leaving the Methodist Church after service conducted by Rev. N W Lickiss. During the service two of deceased's favourite Hymns "Jesu Lover of My Soul" and "Abide With Me" were sung. Mr Lickiss made feeling reference to the life of deceased. He said "The late Mr Wales possessed those qualities which we had learned to associate with the pioneers. He was a man of simple tastes, independent spirit, high principles and Christian faith. In past years the family had been closely associated with the Church at Young, but of late Mr Wales depended largely on the Bible for inspiration and comfort. That Book was his constant companion and guide, and on its teaching he was no mean authority.

Speaking of the present upheaval in the world and the inevitable changes after the war Mr Lickiss said "That a new generation may interpret the Bible and the truths of Christianity in a way that will differ from the pioneers, but the need of God and spiritual things will still exist. We can best honor the dead by building characters and homes on the Christian foundations which alone have proved adequate to meet the storm of life".

The deceased was laid to rest in the family enclosure, alongside the remains of his late wife in the presence of a large number of sympathising relatives and friends. The pallbearers were Messrs Bernie Wales (Grandson), Jack Wales (Light Horse) Nephew; Alfred I'Anson (Son-in-Law), and Ollie Wales (Nephew). Rev. Lickiss officiated at the grave side. The family wreath was lowered with the coffin.

The death occurred at the Young District Hospital on Wednesday evening last of Albert Thomas Wales, 78 yrs, of Murringo Street, one of the oldest and most highly respected residents throughout the district.

Deceased was born at Rye Park and was the third son of the late Mr. and Mrs. Edward Wales. He was married at Boorowa to Esther Jane Perks on September 4th 1889, at the age of 25. He spent all his early life at Rye Park and after marriage, came to Young where he had resided ever since. He had lived in the same house in Murringo Street for over fifty years. In his early years he engaged in the carrying business - in the days of horses and waggons, and he took a keen pride in his team. His last big carrying job was carting all the building materiel for the settlers homes at Kingsvale, Prunevale and Waterview. He took interest in politics and Local Government matters and possessed a very retentive memory for dates, and could recall important events away back in the early days.

In his young days Albert Wales was an excellent horseman and all round athlete, being a well-known foot runner at district sports meetings. For the last fifteen years the late Mr. Wales had lived in retirement.

His wife predeceased him about eleven years ago.

Deceased took suddenly ill on Monday last and was conveyed to the Hospital by the Youg Ambulance, where his condition gradually declined and he passed away about 5 pm on Wednesday.

He had four children of whom Desmond predeceased him many years ago. The surviving children are Mabel (Mrs A Mote) Yass; Hilda (Mrs A I'Anson) Iandra; Earl, Kingsvale. Other remaining relatives are his brothers, Oliver and Fred (Young), Charles (Summer Hill), Hubert (Waverley); sisters, Mrs A Pearsall, Mrs W Herrett (Canterbury), Mrs A Gannon (Melbourne), Mrs W Gabel (Oatley), Mrs T McBeth (Hurstville).

Albert Wales was brought up on his grandfather William Wales' farm at Pudman Creek, lots 56 and 57, which totalled 90 acres. A further 50 acres were also bought in the name of William's son Patrick. His grandfather taught him to shear sheep and to split fence posts.

Albert also spent a lot of time with his father, Edward Wales, who was a carrier with his own wagon and horses. They would cart wool away after the shearing. Albert joined the Shearer's Union in 1880.

On one occasion when Albert was cutting railway sleepers in the mountains (Ben Hall country) he found a revolver which is now in the Forbes museum.

As a young lad, Albert was a good foot runner and he won many events around the Boorowa district.

Next to William Wales' farm (Ashfield or Ashford), the Perks family owned a number of blocks of land which was how Albert met his future wife Esther Jane Perks, born 23rd January 1869. On 1st April 1891 Esther received a block of land from Benjamin Perks. This block had been taken up by Benjamin on 8th April 1862 (County of King, Parish of Olney, portion 7, area 40 acres). It is believed that Esther sold this land when she married Albert.

Albert and Esther left Pudman Creek and went to live at 13 Murringo Street (corner of Murringo and Currawong) now known as Gordon Street, Young, NSW. On the property was a four roomed house with a verandah at the front and back. On one end of the back verandah was an extra room, which Albert and Esther used as their bedroom. Some distance from the house, at the back fence, was another building they called the dairy, and next to that was a 20ft well with a pump on it. They used the water from this well for the house and for Albert's horses. In the hot weather they put their butter in a basket and lowered it down into the well to keep cool.

Also on the property was a large shed about 12x20x15ft high in which Albert kept bagged chaff for his horses and cows. On the side of this chaff shed was a lean-to of about 20x8ft in which he kept his sulky and spring cart, and at one end was a work shop. Between the house and the horse yard was a cow bail for milking, a fowl house and a wood heap. In the middle of the horse yard was the double shafted wagon. Albert's horses were named Trump, Star, Smiler, Nell and two others. There was also Snowy, a red eyed albino that he trained to count with it's front hoof.

Further along Currawong Street on the Burrangong Creek Albert had a large block of land where he turned out his horses at night. He brought them back again at dawn the next day to feed them and get them ready to go to work.

Albert taught himself to read and write. Although he was a religious man, he seldom went to church; but no way would he work on a Sunday, and did not like to see anyone else working on a Sunday.

Albert would sell milk and cream to some of his neighbours, but if they didn't have much money, he would not ask for payment. He also did that with loads of wood, and he would not accept payment from a widow. It was the way he was brought up at Pudman Creek, so Albert was always a poor man.

When he first went to Young and while bringing up his children Albert was a shearer and was one of the early members of the Shearer's Union when he was 25 years old. In later life Albert took up fence contracting. He erected the fence around 43 Pritchard Street, Yass where his daughter Mabel Mote and her husband, Albert Thomas Mote, were to build their new home. Albert also erected a fence for Mick Sexton of Shaw Street, Yass when the Sextons built their new house. The Sextons had been neighbours of Mabel Mote in Pritchard Street before they moved to Shaw Street.

Albert Wales would also drive his horse and sulky from his home at Young to visit his youngest daughter, Hilda I'Anson at "Uppingham" near Grenfell to help in the garden. On one of these trips to "Uppingham" Albert took a turn in the garden and had to be taken back to Young in Alfred I'Anson's car. Albert's grandson Gordon (Bob) Mote, son of Mabel Mote, was also working at Uppingham at the time and was given the job of returning Albert's horse and sulky to Young. Bob had to take his push bike in the sulky so as to be able to ride it back to "Uppingham" after delivering the sulky.

Albert Wales' brothers Oliver and Fred would visit him and Esther at Murringo Street. They kept in touch all of their lives. Olly Wales worked for many years for the Young council and Fred was a part owner of The Young Witness newspaper. Ern Begg, Albert's brother-in-law, also spent a lot of time with Albert. Ern was a blacksmith.

Death of Mrs. E. Perks.

As the evening church bells of Xmas Day pealed, passed away the spirit of Eliza Perks, one of the gentlest christians in the town of Young. The deceased was the daughter of the late William Armstrong of Edgerton, Mundoonan, and was born 78 years ago in Sydney. In 1867 she married Josiah William Perks, grazier of Rye Park, but in 1885 her husband died at Yass. Although left with a young family of seven, without a husband's help and comfort she bravely undertook the management of her late husband's properties and reared her children facing her trials with a true christian fortitude and faith that set her children an example that it has not been the privilege of all families to enjoy. About 15 years ago she came to live at Young where most of the family were residing. Although never very active of late years she had not been really ailing till a fortnight ago, when she contracted slight congestion of the lungs. Despite every earthly attention being given with unfailing devotion by her son and daughters she seemed to gradually sink, passing peacefully away. Besides the sorrowing daughter, Mrs. Begg at whose home she died she leaves, two other daughters, viz. Mrs. A. Wales (Young) Mrs. A. Plumb (Gunning ) also three sons, Harry (Milthorpe), Josiah (Eugowra), and Dunstan (Young). Two daughters predeceased the husband and one son,William, died seventeen months ago, during the influenza epidemic.

The remains enclosed in a silver mounted polished maple casket were laid to rest on Sunday in the Methodist portion of the Young cemetery. Rev. A. E.Putland officiated at the graveside, and spoke feelingly of the splendid christian character of the deceased. Loving, and being a staunch adherent of the church, the hymn "That Will be Glory For Me" which she always loved so much to hear was sung over the grave. As the years pass by the family will realise the truth of one of her many sayings?"The memory of a good life scents like a rose, after death."⁵

OBITUARY.

MR. EDWARD WALES.

Early on Wednesday morning there passed away a very old resident of the district in the person of Mr. Edward Wales at the age of 77 years. The deceased gentleman, who had been residing with his daughter (Mrs. J. Pearsall) for the past seven months had been in failing health for many years, and since a severe illness about 12 years ago, never properly recovered . Up till a few days ago, however, he was able to get about town. On Saturday being seized with an attack of bronchitis and heart failure, and the end came as stated on Wednesday morning. The late Mr. Wales was born at Bowning and at the age of 19 married at Burrowa. He lived principally at Rye Park, following the occupation of a carrier. He came to reside at Young, about 27 years ago, and up till about 15 years ago was able to follow his avocation. For some years now his wife and some members of the family have resided in Sydney, but the old gentleman did not like city life, and resided with different members of the family in the country. He leaves a widow and family of seven sons, and six daughters. Mrs. Wales who is 75 years of age, resides at Daceyville and is at present very ill, as also is the youngest daughter (Mrs. McBeth). The sons are: Messrs. James (Kingsvale road, Young), Oliver (Burrowa road), Albert (Marengo street, Young), Fred J. (Witness office, Young), Charles (Sydney, and formerly of Grenfell), Alfred (Arncliffe), Hubert (Arncliffe); the daughters are Mrs. J. Pearsall (Young), Mrs. William Herrett (Red- fern), Mrs. W. A. Hourn (Kensing- ton), Mrs. M. Gannon (Harden), Miss Ada (Daceyville), Mrs. T. McBeth (Daceyville). Mr. Thomas Wales (Cootamundra), and Mr. Robert Wales (Rye Park) are step-brothers, whilst Mrs. W. Wiggins (Wambanumba) is a step sister. The funeral which was well attended took place yesterday afternoon, the remains being laid to rest in the Methodist portion of the Young cemetery. The Rev. C. P. Walkden-Brown officiated at the grave. Deceased was always an admirer of the Salvation Army and at his express wish, the members of the local corps, sang his favorite hymns at the graveside.²

TO BE OPENED ON WEDNESDAY

For years past the Methodists of Young have felt the need of increased accommodation for their Sunday School, particularly the Infant sec- tion which has been crowded into the vestry at the rear of the Epworih Hall. The effort to secure more suitable and adequate premises for the Kindergarten has now culminated in the erection of a new hall at the rear of the Church, which is to be opened by Miss Hilda Wales, the Su- perintendent of the Kindergarten De- partment of the School. After pre- liminary addresses and a song by the Tinies themselves Miss Wales will turn the key und invite the audience to inspect the new hall, after which the company will pass through the hall into the church where the Dedi- cation Service will be conducted by Rev. L. Peacock.

At 8 o'clock In the evening a com- plementary to Rev. L. Peacock will take the form of a conversazione in the Epworth hall and will enable his old friends to meet him and each other for a social hour.²
