OBITUARY

MRS. ESTHER JANE WALES

The death occurred in the Sacred Heart Hospital on Saturday evening, after a short illness of Mrs. Esther Jane Wales, wife of Mr. Albert Wales, aged 62 years.

With her husband and family deceased had been a resident of Marengo Street, Young, for the past 40 years, and she was highly esteemedby a wide circle of friends, her sweet disposition and kind heartedness endearing her to all who knew her.

Until two years ago deceased had enjoyed the best of health. She received a stroke in 1929 which resulted in partial paralysis. This did not affect her good spirits, and she still remained active. Last Thursday week illness supervened and deceased was removed to hospital, where despite medical and nursing skill, she gradually declined and she passed peacefully away as stated.

The late Mrs. Wales was a native of Rye Park, the daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. J. W. Perks. She was married at Burrowa in 1889 and came to Young with her husband immediately after the wedding, and has resided here ever since. Her life was one of devotion and self sacrifice for her family, and her almost daily acts of kindness and neighbourliness to others in times of sickness and trial will long be remembered.

A family of one son and two daughters survive, another son Des mond having predeceased her about three years ago. , The surviving members are Mrs. A. Moate (Yass), Mrs. A. I'Anson (landra) j and Mr. Earl Wales (Young). Brothers and sisters of the deceased are Mrs. A. Plumb (Gunning), Mrs. B. Begg (Young), Mrs. Harry Perks (Mill- thorpe), and Mr. Joseph Perks (Orange). The funeral took place from Patterson's Funeral Parlours to the Methodist portion of the Young cemetery, where the body was laid to rest in the family grave. Despite the short notice and extreme heat, the funeral was largely at- tended. Rev. P. H. Curtis officiated, conducting a short service before the cortege moved to the cemetery. The pall-bearers were Mssrs. I. Joyce, W. Smithers and deceased two nephews, Messrs. Oliver and Roy Wales.

Many beautiful floral tributes were sent, including the following; Dad and the Girls; Eva and Jim Pizarro and family; Mr. and Mrs. Reg Foster, and Mr. O. Wales; Mrs. and Misses Tonkin; Ollie and Reg; Ernest, Rebecca and Glad; Mrs. J. Wales; Claude, Ruby, Phyl and Joy; Fred, Lizzie and family; Mr. and Mrs. W. Sutton and family; Mr. and Mrs. J. F. Kleen and family; Mr. and Mrs. C. Price and family; Mr. and Mrs. Claude Symons; Eric, Angella, Bernie, Joan and Dick; Jean and Harold and others without cards attached. -- The Young Witness.1

a local paper, Young, NSW, AustraliaG1942Albert Thomas Wales had an obituary appear in a local paper, Young, NSW, AustraliaG, in 1942 as follows:
THE FUNERAL

The funeral took place yesterday afternoon, the cortege leaving the Methodist Church after service conducted by Rev. N W Lickiss. During the service two of deceased's favourite Hymns "Jesu Lover of My Soul" and "Abide With Me" were sung. Mr Lickiss made feeling reference to the life of deceased. He said "The late Mr Wales possessed those qualities which we had learned to associate with the pioneers. He was a man of simple tastes, independent spirit, high principles and Christian faith. In past years the family had been closely associated with the Church at Young, but of late Mr Wales depended largely on the Bible for inspiration and comfort. That Book was his constant companion and guide, and on its teaching he was no mean authority.

Speaking of the present upheaval in the world and the inevitable changes after the war Mr Lickiss said "That a new generation may interpret the Bible and the truths of Christianity in a way that will differ from the pioneers, but the need of God and spiritual things will still exist. We can best honor the dead by building characters and homes on the Christian foundations which alone have proved adequate to meet the storm of life".

The deceased was laid to rest in the family enclosure, alongside the remains of his late wife in the presence of a large number of sympathising relatives and friends. The pallbearers were Messrs Bernie Wales (Grandson), Jack Wales (Light Horse) Nephew; Alfred I'Anson (Son-in-Law), and Ollie Wales (Nephew). Rev. Lickiss officiated at the grave side. The family wreath was lowered with the coffin.

a local paper, Young, NSW, AustraliaGHe had an obituary appear in a local paper, Young, NSW, AustraliaG, as follows:
LINK WITH THE EARLY DAYS
SEVERED BY DEATH OF MR. ALBERT THOMAS WALES

The death occurred at the Young District Hospital on Wednesday evening last of Albert Thomas Wales, 78 yrs, of Murringo Street, one of the oldest and most highly respected residents throughout the district.

Deceased was born at Rye Park and was the third son of the late Mr. and Mrs. Edward Wales. He was married at Boorowa to Esther Jane Perks on September 4th 1889, at the age of 25. He spent all his early life at Rye Park and after marriage, came to Young where he had resided ever since. He had lived in the same house in Murringo Street for over fifty years. In his early years he engaged in the carrying business - in the days of horses and waggons, and he took a keen pride in his team. His last big carrying job was carting all the building materiel for the settlers homes at Kingsvale, Prunevale and Waterview. He took interest in politics and Local Government matters and possessed a very retentive memory for dates, and could recall important events away back in the early days.

In his young days Albert Wales was an excellent horseman and all round athlete, being a well-known foot runner at district sports meetings. For the last fifteen years the late Mr. Wales had lived in retirement.

His wife predeceased him about eleven years ago.

Deceased took suddenly ill on Monday last and was conveyed to the Hospital by the Youg Ambulance, where his condition gradually declined and he passed away about 5 pm on Wednesday.

He had four children of whom Desmond predeceased him many years ago. The surviving children are Mabel (Mrs A Mote) Yass; Hilda (Mrs A I'Anson) Iandra; Earl, Kingsvale. Other remaining relatives are his brothers, Oliver and Fred (Young), Charles (Summer Hill), Hubert (Waverley); sisters, Mrs A Pearsall, Mrs W Herrett (Canterbury), Mrs A Gannon (Melbourne), Mrs W Gabel (Oatley), Mrs T McBeth (Hurstville).

Other Details

LabelDateDetails
ArticleAlbert Wales was brought up on his grandfather William Wales' farm at Pudman Creek, lots 56 and 57, which totalled 90 acres. A further 50 acres were also bought in the name of William's son Patrick. His grandfather taught him to shear sheep and to split fence posts.

Albert also spent a lot of time with his father, Edward Wales, who was a carrier with his own wagon and horses. They would cart wool away after the shearing. Albert joined the Shearer's Union in 1880.

On one occasion when Albert was cutting railway sleepers in the mountains (Ben Hall country) he found a revolver which is now in the Forbes museum.

As a young lad, Albert was a good foot runner and he won many events around the Boorowa district.

Next to William Wales' farm (Ashfield or Ashford), the Perks family owned a number of blocks of land which was how Albert met his future wife Esther Jane Perks, born 23rd January 1869. On 1st April 1891 Esther received a block of land from Benjamin Perks. This block had been taken up by Benjamin on 8th April 1862 (County of King, Parish of Olney, portion 7, area 40 acres). It is believed that Esther sold this land when she married Albert.

Albert and Esther left Pudman Creek and went to live at 13 Murringo Street (corner of Murringo and Currawong) now known as Gordon Street, Young, NSW. On the property was a four roomed house with a verandah at the front and back. On one end of the back verandah was an extra room, which Albert and Esther used as their bedroom. Some distance from the house, at the back fence, was another building they called the dairy, and next to that was a 20ft well with a pump on it. They used the water from this well for the house and for Albert's horses. In the hot weather they put their butter in a basket and lowered it down into the well to keep cool.

Also on the property was a large shed about 12x20x15ft high in which Albert kept bagged chaff for his horses and cows. On the side of this chaff shed was a lean-to of about 20x8ft in which he kept his sulky and spring cart, and at one end was a work shop. Between the house and the horse yard was a cow bail for milking, a fowl house and a wood heap. In the middle of the horse yard was the double shafted wagon. Albert's horses were named Trump, Star, Smiler, Nell and two others. There was also Snowy, a red eyed albino that he trained to count with it's front hoof.

Further along Currawong Street on the Burrangong Creek Albert had a large block of land where he turned out his horses at night. He brought them back again at dawn the next day to feed them and get them ready to go to work.

Albert taught himself to read and write. Although he was a religious man, he seldom went to church; but no way would he work on a Sunday, and did not like to see anyone else working on a Sunday.

Albert would sell milk and cream to some of his neighbours, but if they didn't have much money, he would not ask for payment. He also did that with loads of wood, and he would not accept payment from a widow. It was the way he was brought up at Pudman Creek, so Albert was always a poor man.

When he first went to Young and while bringing up his children Albert was a shearer and was one of the early members of the Shearer's Union when he was 25 years old. In later life Albert took up fence contracting. He erected the fence around 43 Pritchard Street, Yass where his daughter Mabel Mote and her husband, Albert Thomas Mote, were to build their new home. Albert also erected a fence for Mick Sexton of Shaw Street, Yass when the Sextons built their new house. The Sextons had been neighbours of Mabel Mote in Pritchard Street before they moved to Shaw Street.

Albert Wales would also drive his horse and sulky from his home at Young to visit his youngest daughter, Hilda I'Anson at "Uppingham" near Grenfell to help in the garden. On one of these trips to "Uppingham" Albert took a turn in the garden and had to be taken back to Young in Alfred I'Anson's car. Albert's grandson Gordon (Bob) Mote, son of Mabel Mote, was also working at Uppingham at the time and was given the job of returning Albert's horse and sulky to Young. Bob had to take his push bike in the sulky so as to be able to ride it back to "Uppingham" after delivering the sulky.

Albert Wales' brothers Oliver and Fred would visit him and Esther at Murringo Street. They kept in touch all of their lives. Olly Wales worked for many years for the Young council and Fred was a part owner of The Young Witness newspaper. Ern Begg, Albert's brother-in-law, also spent a lot of time with Albert. Ern was a blacksmith.
Photofrom 1889 to 1893Albert Thomas Wales was a member of the Shearer's Union.

Death of Mrs. E. Perks.

As the evening church bells of Xmas Day pealed, passed away the spirit of Eliza Perks, one of the gentlest christians in the town of Young. The deceased was the daughter of the late William Armstrong of Edgerton, Mundoonan, and was born 78 years ago in Sydney. In 1867 she married Josiah William Perks, grazier of Rye Park, but in 1885 her husband died at Yass. Although left with a young family of seven, without a husband's help and comfort she bravely undertook the management of her late husband's properties and reared her children facing her trials with a true christian fortitude and faith that set her children an example that it has not been the privilege of all families to enjoy. About 15 years ago she came to live at Young where most of the family were residing. Although never very active of late years she had not been really ailing till a fortnight ago, when she contracted slight congestion of the lungs. Despite every earthly attention being given with unfailing devotion by her son and daughters she seemed to gradually sink, passing peacefully away. Besides the sorrowing daughter, Mrs. Begg at whose home she died she leaves, two other daughters, viz. Mrs. A. Wales (Young) Mrs. A. Plumb (Gunning ) also three sons, Harry (Milthorpe), Josiah (Eugowra), and Dunstan (Young). Two daughters predeceased the husband and one son,William, died seventeen months ago, during the influenza epidemic.

The remains enclosed in a silver mounted polished maple casket were laid to rest on Sunday in the Methodist portion of the Young cemetery. Rev. A. E.Putland officiated at the graveside, and spoke feelingly of the splendid christian character of the deceased. Loving, and being a staunch adherent of the church, the hymn "That Will be Glory For Me" which she always loved so much to hear was sung over the grave. As the years pass by the family will realise the truth of one of her many sayings?"The memory of a good life scents like a rose, after death."5

Methodist Kindergarten Hall.

TO BE OPENED ON WEDNESDAY

For years past the Methodists of Young have felt the need of increased accommodation for their Sunday School, particularly the Infant sec- tion which has been crowded into the vestry at the rear of the Epworih Hall. The effort to secure more suitable and adequate premises for the Kindergarten has now culminated in the erection of a new hall at the rear of the Church, which is to be opened by Miss Hilda Wales, the Su- perintendent of the Kindergarten De- partment of the School. After pre- liminary addresses and a song by the Tinies themselves Miss Wales will turn the key und invite the audience to inspect the new hall, after which the company will pass through the hall into the church where the Dedi- cation Service will be conducted by Rev. L. Peacock.

At 8 o'clock In the evening a com- plementary to Rev. L. Peacock will take the form of a conversazione in the Epworth hall and will enable his old friends to meet him and each other for a social hour.2

TEACHER HONORED.

After the Sunday School lessons were over at the Methodist Church on Sunday, the opportunity was taken to make a small presentation to Miss Hilda Wales, superintendent of the Kindergarten department, on the occasion of her approaching marriage to Mr. Alfred I'Anson, which happy event takes place during the present month. The present was from the parents of the kindergarten children and the kindergarten staff and was a beautiful tea set of best English china. Mr. A.R. Chellew, the general superintendent of the school, made the presentation, and in doing so, spoke of the enthusiastic service which Miss Wales had given over a long period of years. Her cheerful nature had endeared her to the children and her enthusiasm had been an inspiration to the teachers under her. She would be greatly missed in the school. Miss Wales suitably replied.2

WEDDING.

MITCHELL/ WATT

A wedding of great interest to country people, both here and at Corowa and Albury took place in the Greenethorpe Methodist Church on Saturday, April 8 when Daphne, eld est daughter of Mr and Mrs T. A. Watt of 'Glenview' Greenethorpe was married to Mr Harold Mitchell, the youngest son of Mr and Mrs T. P. Mitchell of 'Hugleside' Balldale.

The bride is particularly well known, being a member of the Southwell family whose centenary celebrations were held at Canberra recently.

Great bowls of dahlias, and Easter daisies, and a most unusual festoon of marigolds made one of the most beautiful displays of flowers ever seen in the church.

Preceded by her small cousin, Sylvia Watt, who wore a dainty frock of pale green chiffon flounced with pink and carrying a gold basket of pink gladioli Miss Watt entered the church on the arm of her father.

The bride made a beautiful picture as she walked down the aisle. Her train gown was of white angel skin lace over satin, and she carried a bouquet of white gladioli and tuberoses while her long cut tulle veil was held in place by a cluster of gardenias.

Misses Sadie and Hilda Watt and Miss Rhosa Southwell, sisters and cousin of the bride respectively, were her maids of honour and they wore perfectly cut gowns of a delightful shade of salmon pink. The circular swing skirts were flounced with match ing lace as also were the bodices and short, slightly puffed sleeves. They carried shower bouquets of talisman roses and their tulle head dresses were held in place by a top knot of roses to mjatch their bouquets.

The gentlemen attendants to the groom were Mr. Victor Wilson (best man); and Messrs. Jim Brissenden and Nevin Watt (groomsmen.

The ushers were Mr. Rex Smith, Mr Hugh McColl and Mr Viv Morgan.

Mr. Ron Diprose drove the bridal car.

Just before the bride entered the church Miss Joyce Mote sang 'When Song is Sweet' and in the course of the service the choir rendered 'O Perfect Love.' Miss Esmide Smith sang 'All Joy Be Thine' during the signing of the register.

After the ceremony the 150 guests were received at the Soldiers' Memorial Hall by Mrs Allan Watt and Mrs T. F Mitchell. The former wore a navy frock with insertions of gold, navy accessories and a posy of autumn tinted roses Mrs Mitchell chose an ensemble of black, relieved with floral trimmings and a posy of pink and cream, roses.

The breakfast, which was catered for by the Ladies' Church Aid was beautifully served and during a most enjoyable repast the following toasts were honoured:
The King, proposed by (Rev. Fleming; The Bride and Groom also by Mr. Fleming and this was respond ed to by the groom in a most capable manner; The Bridesmaids, proposed by Mr Harold Mitchell and responded to by Mr. Victor Wilson; Parents of the Bride, by Mr J. R. Dawe and res ponded to by Mr T. A. Watt; Parents of the Groom by Mr A. C. Southwell (Balldale) and responded to by Mr Chapman (a son in law) .

A vote of thanks to the chairman was proposed by Mr Stocks, of New castle.

The toasts were interspersed with items. They comprised a recitation by Miss J. Adams; songs by Miss Bryer and Mr. S. Starr; and a quartette by Mr and Mrs F. Gray and Mr and Mrs A. I'Anson

Mrs. Mitchell's travelling frock was of a delightful shade of teal blue with which she wore grape wine accessories. The shoulder line was squared and the bodice to which was pinned a single rose and had sunray pleating radiating from the waistline.

Aflter many expressions of good wishes, Mr and Mrs Mitchell left by car for their honeymoon which is to be spent motoring.

AnecdoteHilly, as her mother and father called her, was not interested in horses like her sister Mabel, she spent her time cooking and piano playing. The Methodist Church was her interest, she sang in the church choir and taught in the Sunday School. Her ambition was to become a Methodist Missionary, but that never eventuated.

One of Hilda's special friends was Perlie Wales (her cousin) who married Carl Starr and many a good time they had together. When it was time for Hilda to take a work position she did so with Stumpf and Graham as bookkeeper and cashier in their grocery store in Burrowa Street, Young.

In the early 1920s, before Hilda married, she decided to go to see her sister (Mabel), so she came with her cousin Claude Wales on the train to Yass to spend a few days. She was very fond of her nephew Gordon (all through her life she kept in touch with him) and was hoping that he would become a Methodist Minister, but it was not to be.

Hilda met Alfred I'Anson through the Methodist Church. He rode a motor bike on Sunday evenings from Iandra to Young to take Hilda to church (not on the bike). When her nephew and niece Gordon (Bob) and Joyce Mote were on holidays at Young, they were sent out side of number 13 Murringo Street, Hilda's home, to wait for Alfred. There were not many motor bikes about in those days and one could hear them a long way off. When Gordon and Joyce saw him coming up the road (at a fast rate of 15 miles an hour) they would run inside the house to tell Hilda her boy friend was coming. She would get very excited and she would make sure that her hair was tidy, it was so long it hung down her back and she could sit on the end of it, she would plait it and it looked great.

In 1923 Hilda and Alfred decided to get married, the date was set as the 26th September1923 and great excitement was on. Hilda left Stumpf and Grahams and prepared for the wedding. The Motes from Yass arrived and Gordon & Joyce had to stay outside the house while dresses were made and tried on. Gordon can remember the wedding breakfast at the Methodist Church Hall. There was an aisle down the centre of the hall and long tables down each side. He can also remember sitting in the back row near the front door on the left side, and on the table in front of his place, a bottle of lemonade, a plate of ham sandwiches and a plate of cakes to his delight.

Iandra was to be the first home for Hilda and Alfred, and when her son Keith was to be born she went to Young and stayed with her mother. Mabel, her sister, came to Young at the same time (Gordon came too). When the day came for the baby to be born, Hilda was to be taken to the hospital. Her father harnessed the horse into the sulky and some of the family went with her (Gordon sat on the floor of the sulky). The baby Keith Leonard was born on Saturday the 9th May 1925 and after about ten days she arrived back to her mother's home to stay until she was sure she could look after Keith.

Most of Hilda and Alfred's holidays were spent at Yass with Mabel and Albert Mote and their favourite spots to visit were the Murrumbidgee River and Canberra. It was usually Christmas time when they came to Yass. At first Alfred had an Overland car that he drove down. Later he went to Sydney to buy a new car and Hilda and Keith stayed with her mother at Young. Alfred phoned Hilda and told her he would be home the next day and that he had bought a new Austin 7. It was a couple of days before the Young show, and the Motes were at Young on holidays, and Gordon and Joyce sat out in front of the house to wait for Alfred to arrive with the new Austin. He arrived late in the afternoon but not with an Austin, but with a big Packard, and was Hilda excited. She had been wondering how a family would fit into a small Austin.

Hilda and Alfred decided to move from Iandra to "Uppingham", a nice farming property between Koorawatha and Grenfell, so the big move was on. The furniture was loaded onto wagons and taken across country to the new home. There was a lot of cleaning up to be done and Gordon, her nephew, came and helped with the moving and cleaning up; everyone was happy while doing this.

The Methodist Church at Greenethorpe was a place where Hilda spent much of her time; cooking for fetes and special occasions, singing in the choir and teaching Sunday School, also arranging plays and concerts .

At Uppingham there was a tennis court that was well maintained and friends from around the district would come and have a day playing tennis.

Keith, Hilda's son, went to school at Grenfell and had to catch the train every day; this he did until he went to Newington College in 1942.

Most of Hilda's shopping was done at Young and this in the early part of the marriage gave Hilda a chance to see her father and mother, also her cousin Glad Begg of whom she was very fond. Then 1942 became a big year for Hilda, the second world war was on and things started to happen, petrol rationing, clothing coupons, food coupons and travelling restrictions on trains. Keith was away at Newington College, the furniture shop of Gordon, Mote & Co that was being run for Alfred was taken over by the Government for an ammunition factory, also Alfred's mother died on Thursday 9th April 1942 and was buried at Iandra. Gordon went into the army in November 1942 and his wife and child went to Yass to live with Gordon's parents for the duration of the war. Hilda had an accident with the horse and sulky, she was thrown out and suffered injuries and was unconscious for some time, but survived the ordeal. Also her father passed away on 3rd June 1942. Also Audrey, (Gordon's wife) gave birth to a son, Robert, on the 16th February 1942.

On 31-1-1948 Keith married Marie Bennett and went and lived and managed a property called Maryvale that Alfred had bought at Tygong. Keith and Marie had four children so Hilda became a grandmother.

Alfred and Hilda went to South Australia for a holiday to see where Alfred's family lived before his father came to Iandra in a big wagon where he was to make his home.

Alfred and Hilda lived happily at Uppingham until the 23-8-1973 when Alfred passed away and was buried at Iandra. Hilda stayed on at Uppingham and Keith managed the place until Hilda died on 10th August 1976.
