The Grenfell Record, Grenfell, NSW, AustraliaG22 April 1929Mary Nealon had an obituary appear in The Grenfell Record, Grenfell, NSW, AustraliaG, on Monday, 22 April 1929 as follows: OLD IDENTITY PASSES

Elsewhere in this edition reference is made to Mrs. Wales, a daughter of a pioneer of the Burrowa District. It is with regret that we have to record the passing away of her sister, Mrs. William Nealon.

Born in Sydney in 1844 she was one of the young family that the late William Percival brought with him to Rye Park. She married Mr. W. Nealon at the age of 17. Some few years later her husband decided to trek further west. They traveled by bullock dray. This was in 1871, a very wet season for when “Granny”, when relating the incidents on her life in this district would tell how they had to camp on the banks of the Tyagong for several days waiting for the flood to subside. Then they had a family of three. Eventually the family settled at Two Mile and have resided there for 57 years. Mr. Harry Nealon occupies the old homestead. The late Mrs. Nealon’s husband familiarly known as Billy Nealon was a carrier and with the bullock teams he used he had the reputation of being one of the best teamsters on the road. Generally his trips were between Cowra and Grenfell but occasionally he brought loads from Sydney. While in Sydney he used to relate he un-yoked his bullocks not far from the Botanical Gardens. Travelling over the mountains in those days was via Bathurst he had to tie saplings at the back of drays to act as brakes. With his bullocks in power he was the first at the new land at Quandong with the late Mr. W. Graham in 1871. Listening in as it were to the early stories of the old pioneers the bush was not by any means a bed of roses. It was a hard life indeed and “Granny”, the name of the late Mrs. Nealon was more familiarly known by had her share, with more added. As a bush nurse Granny’s services were very much in demand and being of a most unselfish nature she was always ready to help those who were sick and sorrowing. On many occasions when death entered the homes of the early pioneers Granny was there to prepare the dead for burial and to console the bereaved. For many years she carried out the duties of the collector for the Army’s Self Denial Fund. In fact it only recently that she reluctantly gave up the position on account of the toll of years making the task hard.
Nearly 60 years at the Two Mile.

What wonderful changes Granny had seen in the matter of transport alone. First came the railway service then motor lorries and cars passed by the old homestead on the Cowra Road. A daily demonstration of great changes that had taken place in her lifetime.

Her family numbered twelve. Two however died while they were very young. Her oldest son Tom died a little over a year ago. Other members of the family are Mrs. John Murray, (Bondi) Mrs. J. Stiff, William, John, Arthur, Henry (Grenfell), Clarence at Bathurst, Mrs. Lamont at Narellan.

There are 59 grandchildren, and 32 great grandchildren, a total of 91 descendants.7
