ArticleWritten by Joan Barrett

Cecil Allan Barrett was the fourth of seven sons of William and Vida Barrett. He was born in Dubbo on 25th May 1912.

His first recollections were of living in Dubbo around the age of four. From there the family moved to Ballymore where brother Tom was born, and his little brother Garnet died of pneumonia at around the age of two. His father, William, was employed at Ballymore cutting sleepers for the railway, and from Ballymore the family moved on to Warrigal near Nyngan, where their father worked as a fettler and Cecil started school - they travelled to the school at Nyngan by train. Rabbit trapping here was a great pastime, but unfortunately, one day Cec and his brother Vic pulled up someone else's traps, thinking they had made a great find. Unfortunately their father found out and got them out of bed one cold and frosty morning and sent them to retrieve the traps and return them to the rightful owner!

They came home one day from school only to be told by their mother that they were moving off the next day to Sydney, much to the glee of the boys. Their father had had a Council job offered to him there - but being of a wandering nature and a real "bushie", he did not stay long in the "big smoke" but took the family off to Cootamundra, where Cec started school in earnest and brother Roy was born. They stayed there for about three years.

William Barrett was a man who was always looking for greener pastures and he had no compunction about uprooting his family from a happy environment to go searching for the mythical rainbow.

At Pinkerton, Cec could remember his Grandparents, Jimmie and Emily Barrett, visiting them. His father acquired a horse and sulky here, a wagonette and two horses and before long they were off again to Elong Elong and Crookwell until word came on the bush telegraph that the rabbits were queuing up to get into their burrows at Tenterfield. This was a long trek by wagon and sulky - six weeks travel over bad country roads. Father, being a handyman, mended implements etc., on properties that they passed - they fished the rivers, camping along the track, found a house in Tenterfield and the boys went back to school.

Eventually they settled in Bathurst when Cec was around the age of eleven. Here they had a good house, schooling and lots of friends. Cec played cricket and was captain of the football team. After several happy years in Bathurst, they moved on again, back to Burraga where their parents had been married and where mother Vida's family lived in the district. Cec had his 21st birthday here. Cec eventually moved to Sydney to work in the abattoirs after working in Queensland in the Mt. Lindsay forest areas.

Cec met his future wife, Joan Edwards, at the tennis club to which they both belonged and were married at St. Nicholas Church, Coogee on 22nd April 1950. Cec was still working at Homebush Abattoirs and decided to study to become a Commonwealth Meat Inspector - this was very difficult owing to his patchy schooling, but he studied hard and it eventually paid off. After several years he was transferred to Newcastle, NSW where he moved in 1966 with his family and wife, Joan, and two sons - Christopher and Geoffrey. These were very happy and active years, and Cec died in Newcastle of Emphysema on 23rd December 1988. He was survived by his widow, two sons and three grandchildren.
