ArticleThey had six children; their daughter Edith Gilbert being the first white baby to be born on the Gilbert River. The sixth child was born after Niels' disappearance in late 1891 or early 1892. As no body was ever found, no death certificate was issued. It was assumed that he was killed by aboriginals.
ArticleImmediately after the wedding the couple departed for 'Bohemia Downs', a property in the Gulf of Carpentaria, not far from Normanton. At the time there were very few Europeans in the Gulf area, except for those on the huge Cattle Stations and a few in the support towns like Normanton. The choice of going to 'Bohemia Downs' was very bad indeed as they were flooded out and had to give up their Farming and move into Normanton where Neils ran a bullock train between Normanton and Croydon Gold Field, about 170 km inland. Neils would be away for long periods of time and there was a constant danger from the aborigines who were often violent towards the Settlers.1
